Summary:

Counterfeit checks drawn on The Chelsea Groton Savings Bank,Norwich, Connecticut, are reportedly in circulation.

The Chelsea Groton Savings Bank, Norwich , Connecticut , has contacted the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to report that counterfeit checks bearing the institution's name are in circulation.

The counterfeit items display the proper routing number of 211173357 for The Chelsea Groton Savings Bank; however, the fraudulent items are markedly dissimilar to authentic bank checks. In the counterfeit items, the bank name is stacked with one word on top of the other (?Chelsea? on top, ?Groton? in the middle and ?Bank? at the bottom) in the upper-left portion of the item. In authentic checks, the bank name appears horizontally as ?ChelseaGroton Bank? (no space between ? Chelsea ? and ? Groton ?), preceded by the bank logo, in the upper-left portion of the check. Also in authentic checks, the wording ?Treasurer's Check? appears in the top-center area of the check; counterfeit items do not include this wording. A copy of a counterfeit item and a copy of an authentic check (VOID) are attached for your review.

Bank of Richmondville, Richmondville, New York, has contacted the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to report that counterfeit official checks bearing the institution's name are in circulation.

The counterfeit items display the proper routing number of 021308396 for Bank of Richmondville. The counterfeit items and the authentic checks are similar. However, the counterfeit items have no border; while authentic checks have a scroll pattern border. The counterfeit items indicate that amounts over $5,000 require two signatures; authentic checks require two signatures for amounts over $3,000. A copy of a counterfeit item and a copy of an authentic check (VOID) are attached for your review.

The layout, style and fonts are different. The counterfeit items enclose the number dollar amount and the date of the check in rectangles; authentic checks do not. Also, the counterfeit items do not include the bank logo with the bank name in the upper-left portion of the item. Entity That May Be Conducting Banking Operations in Canada or the United States Without Authorization

Summary:

Entity may be illegally operating as a financial institution.

 

The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) of Canada has published the attached "Warning Notice" (Issue No. 61), which contains the name of an entity recently brought to OSFI's attention. This entity is Manulife Financial Services, 500 King Street North, Waterloo , Ontario , Canada . This entity, or persons representing this entity, is reportedly operating in Canada , and is illegally using both the mailing address and Web address of Manulife Financial, which is a legitimate financial company not affiliated with the previously named entity. Manulife Financial Services may be violating provisions of the Bank Act ( Canada ) or other Canadian financial institution regulations. It may also be conducting unauthorized banking transactions in the United States . Any proposed transactions involving this entity should be viewed with extreme caution.

Skagit State Bank, Burlington, Washington, has contacted the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to report that counterfeit checks bearing the institution's name are in circulation.

The counterfeit items display the proper routing number of 125105631 for Skagit State Bank; however, the fraudulent items are markedly dissimilar to authentic bank checks. The layout, style and fonts are different. Authentic cashier's checks have a scroll design around the top corners of the check and a scroll design box around the words ?Cashier's Check.? Authentic checks also have a box around the printed dollar amount; the counterfeit items do not. The logo on the authentic checks is smaller than the logo used on the counterfeit items. A copy of a counterfeit item and a copy of an authentic check (VOID) are attached for your review.

The routing number for The Ohio Valley Bank Company is 044204370. Authentic checks are mauve color and have a foil emblem. The counterfeit items display the routing number 113093865, which is assigned to Royal Oaks Bank, ssb, Houston , Texas . However, the items are markedly dissimilar. Authentic cashier's checks use the wording ?Cashier's Check? in the bottom-left portion of the check, with the bank logo in the top-center portion of the check. Counterfeit items have the wording ?Cashier's Check? in a box in the center-top portion of the check, with the logo in the top-left portion of the check. Authentic checks do not have any trim around the edges, while counterfeit checks have pattern trim. A copy of a counterfeit item and a copy of an authentic check (VOID) are attached for your review.

Counterfeit official checks drawn on Farmington Savings Bank, Farmington, Connecticut, are reportedly in circulation.

 

Farmington Savings Bank, Farmington, Connecticut, contacted the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to report that counterfeit checks bearing the institution's name are in circulation.

The counterfeit items display the routing number 211170347, which is assigned to Farmington Savings Bank, and may bear Farmington Savings Bank or another bank's name. However, authentic cashier's checks are payable through Branch Banking and Trust Company (BB&T), Charleston, West Virginia, and display the routing number 051900353. The checks are dissimilar. Authentic checks display the wording "Cashier's Check" near the top of the check and a logo of "FSB" before the bank's name in the top-left portion of the check. Counterfeit items display the wording "Official Check" and do not display a logo similar to that used on authentic cashier's checks. A copy of counterfeit items and a copy of an authentic check (VOID) are attached for your review.

The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco has issued an alert stating that fraudulent checks bearing its name are in circulation. The Federal Reserve Bank does not issue checking accounts.

Detailed below are characteristics of the fraudulent items:

  • All items are pre-authorized and state "no signature required."
  • The words "Federal Reserve Bank" are inscribed on the top-center of the check.
  • The background color varies.
  • A fraudulent account holder's name and address are inscribed in the top-left corner.
  • Dollar amounts vary between $49.95, $59.95 and $149.00.

Authorized Federal Reserve Bank checks have the following characteristics:

  • Checks are signed by Janet L. Yellen.
  • The words "Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco" with the address are inscribed on the top-left corner.
  • The background color is light blue, with the words "Federal Reserve Bank" shaded in the background throughout the item.
  • The payee name and address are printed in the lower-left corner.
