RE: Stolen Official Checks/New York Community Bank

Dear Associates:

By Special Alert dated October 17, 2003, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation advises that 500 official checks (presumably blank) have been reported stolen by New York Community Bank, whose home office is in Westbury, New York. A copy of the FDIC Alert containing further details regarding the matter is attached to this Bulletin. Please be advised however that the copy of the voided genuine check as referenced in the FDIC Alert, is not attached.

It is imperative that all closers for your offices be advised of this development immediately. Any official check of New York Community Bank presented at closing must be reported by the closer to the branch or agency involved and examined by branch or agency personnel to insure that the check number is not among those reported stolen. In the event of any uncertainty regarding the authenticity of such a check, please call company counsel for guidance before proceeding with the closing.

Dissemination of this information among your customers is encouraged as well.
